Officers are encountering synthetic opioids more frequently in the course of their duties. Some of these opioids, including fentanyl, are extremely hazardous and can be lethal to officers who are accidentally exposed. Officers are cautioned to avoid field testing a drug suspected of being or containing synthetic opioids, to take universal precautions when field testing any drug, to be aware of the symptoms of exposure, and to seek immediate medical help if exposure is suspected.
